Your identity is not real

Most of the day you spend thinking and creating stories in your mind. You think about what happened, how you feel about it and contemplate about what could happen in the future. All of this is not real, because it is either a memory or hasn’t happened yet. It is not what is actually happening now. And now is the only thing and moment that is real. The second ago is already past. You don't know, that in every moment you can choose to feel different and see what is really there.

Our mind is this prison, stuffed with thoughts, emotions, memories.

All of them are always changing. Dependent on external factors or your current mood. They are not real, because the mind is always different: you are angry, because someone bumped into you in the subway, you suffer from this feeling. The next minute a colleague brings you your favourite coffee, you have nice chat and feel great. What is now real? Are you angry or happy? Where did angry go? Can you choose not to be angry in the first place?

The only thing permanent is your awareness behind all this. In meditation we try to separate the bubble of thinking and emotions from our awareness. To look from a distance on what is going on in the mind. To see thoughts and emotions bouncing around and to not take them so serious anymore. Why should we, if in the end they are all illusions and imaginations.

The problem is that you get attached to what is going on in the mind.

You are convinced that this defines your identity. You think you are the anger, the fear, the pain. But underneath or beyond these is nothing but emptiness and stillness. This is awareness, that is shining on your emotions, on objects and thoughts. It is you, your true self. Everything around is just a story and you trying to become someone.

Imagine that everyone of us has his own chaos of emotions and thoughts. And everyone thinks that the story is his identity. There is only one earth, but millions of worlds…
